Bridget Kelly On Leaving Roc Nation, New EP & Her Latest Break-Up [VIDEO]
She says that she’s not against labels but she does “champion” being “an independent artist
and finding yourself.”
Most people came to know Kelly after the New York anthem “Empire State of Mind” became so well-received. Fellow singer-songwriter Alicia Keys, the featured vocalist on the Jay Z track, couldn’t make every performance of the song so Kelly would fill in for her and it became a recurring thing after a while.
As a result of her independent status, she was able to do more things such as being a guest host on TV networks VH1 and Fuse, which she said she loved doing. She also discussed how she didn’t want to be
categorized as just straight R&B because she felt it wasn’t her identity:
I definitely wanted to be sort of in that middle lane where it was more musical and more about the content.
Kelly talked about how she “had a blast” during the summer between her junior and senior year of high school as well as about a recent breakup that took place shortly after leaving Roc Nation:
We went on a [mutual] break and then I was over it. I could already feel myself
drifting out of the relationship.
She said her former beau was supportive and was “probably the greatest man” she’s ever met. Kelly is currently celebrating the release of her new EP, “Summer of 17” ands ays that her new music is not catering specifically to 17-year-olds but to that mind frame:
I’m not taking myself that seriously. [If] I don’t get married at 30, I’m not upset.
She says this EP is more about “exploring the possibilities of love.”
