Chrisette Michele Says Blacks Shouldn’t Boycott
Chrisette Michele has taken to social media, weighing in on how she feels folk should react to the current climate in America. In light of the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, coupled with Black Lives Matters marches across the country, many are searching for what should be done. The soulful singer posted a message on social media, stating that while boycotting in the 60’s was affective during the civil rights movement, it would not be effective now. See her thoughts below.
What are YOUR thoughts? Should we consider boycotting?

Girl, stop. And in between voting opportunities…what? I’m not going to bash people who are showing their power and the constructive way they choose to show it. Yes, Nicki Minaj owns a clothing line but not the K Mart that carries them. And again record label owner, your music is being sold THROUGH Target…you don’t OWN the distributor. Whites own it and that’s who boycotters are trying to reach. It’s saying you need us and stop discounting our value. Yes, blacks are making strides all over the place, and a boycott isn’t about to stop that. Obviously we’re already continuing to be the best that we can be. What are you talking about? We are among the most educated, informed, well spoken. We can’t scoff at strategies just because they’ve been used before. Marches and protests were used 60 years ago as well, but should people no longer use these constructive ways to show their discord? These boycotts, marches, protests are what brings attention to the cause and make people talk. It’s what brought the Black Lives Matter movement to the forefront today. Talking brings people together, is a chance for exchanging ideas and coming up with new ones. And you know what, they grow to action.
What…..I disagree with her…
Unfort I do not believe boycotting and protesting is the answer also. I do not know what is the answer but yes, that was the answer 60 years ago. In 2016, they don’t care about that and only see that as another way to harm us.
Hey Roland, you got another one to talk to.
Right!!!!! Only those that don’t understand how powerful we are and how much whites live for wealth would think boycotting won’t work.We are one of the largest minority spending communities in this country. If we stopped spending we could bring them to their knees and to that table to accommodate our needs. The only problem I see with boycotting not working is non unity and discipline in our community. But,We should at least try.
Well said Kim!!!
Hurting the wallet always works, especially when people get together and stick to it.
I agree with her to a point but at the same time she has fallen into the white mans mentality it’s all about my money. One of the problems with black people now days is we have had to work ten times harder then whites to achieve anything and we will do anything to hold on to it. With all the money circulating in Blackwood you would think they would unify themselves and start up their own chain of department stores where they can distribute and sell their own products while creating jobs for the black community. All these rappers and celebrities have a tennis shoe line, cosmetic line, clothing line, perfume line….ect. and they can’t come together and build an empire of department stores. Blacks can not come together unless it’s sports, music or they want to get overly emotional about an racial issue and tear their own community down. We will be fighting racism as long as we are on this earth, we have got to come together on an everyday basis and support one another and not have the attitude “I have mine and you have yours to get, I am happy with me and my three and let me be.” Chrisette Michele is more worried about loosing a dime then saving a life….these black rappers, athletes and celebrities should be the first ones to boycott and pull their merchandise from these stores. They can sell their merchandise online they already have a fan base and don’t necessarily need these conglomerates to move their merchandise other then greed and wanting to take every avenue available to make a dollar. “We need to come together not just when there is a tragedy but everyday.” “Black lives and all lives matter.”
