Issa Rae Cast In “The Hate U Give”
Issa Rae has landed a role in the upcoming film, “The Hate U Give”. The Insecure creator and star will join Amandla Stenberg, who stars in the coming-of-age drama. Additional cast members include Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common.
Amandla plays a 16-year-old girl named Starr who grew up in a poverty-stricken area, but now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, she’s torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth. Issa will play April, the activist that helps Amandla’s character find her voice and speak up.
George Tillman Jr. will direct the project. Issa an actress, writer, director, producer and web series creator.
She is best known as the creator of the YouTube web series Awkward Black Girl and the HBO series Insecure, which is partially based on Awkward Black Girl.
