Tessa Thompson To Portray Jewel Thief Doris Payne In New Movie
Tessa Thompson will portray Doris Payne in a new film. Payne is a woman who gained notoriety for her luxury jewelry heists from stores around the world. Thompson will also produce the currently untitled film with Codeblack Films’ Jeff Clanagan. The film is described as a high-concept action-drama in the vein of “Catch Me if You Can” and “The Thomas Crown Affair.”
Payne’s career as an international jewel thief spans six decades, with a criminal record dating back to 1952. Her modus operandi is to enter jewelry stores posing as a well-to-do woman, typically looking for a diamond ring. Using her charm, she would engage the clerk, asking to see an assortment of items. Eventually, she would “cause the clerk to forget” just how many items were outside the case; and, at some point, she would leave with one or two pieces. She is now 87.
Tessa’s recent film credits include For Colored Girls (2010), Selma (2014), Creed (2015), and Thor: Ragnarok (2017). On television, Thompson starred as Jackie Cook in the mystery drama Veronica Mars (2005–2006), Sara Freeman in the period crime drama Copper (2012–2013), and Charlotte Hale in the HBO science-fiction thriller series Westworld (2016–present).
