Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals That “Betrayals Of The Heart” Have Occurred In Her Marriage

Jada Pinkett Smith and husband Will Smith have been married for over 20 years and in that time, there have been endless rumors of affairs, open relationships and more. Now, in an upcoming episode of Pinkett Smith’s talk show, the actress confirms that there have been definite betrayals in her marriage—even bigger than infidelity.

In a forthcoming episode, the topic surrounds betrayals in relationships and how dealing with them varies between couples. Pinkett Smith, along with couple’s therapist Esther Perel and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, discuss how to navigate your relationship once betrayal has occurred—leading Pinkett Smith to making a shocking admission.

Pinkett Smith asks Perel about divorce alternatives:

“What are the alternatives to divorce? Everybody thinks as soon as you find out there’s been an affair you have to get a divorce.”

To which Perel responds:

“I’m not of that persuasion because I think there are many relational betrayals. Contempt, neglect, and violence and indifference and nobody tells people, ‘Leave, leave, get the hell out.’ And especially on women, it’s the real new pressure. God forbid you still love the person who actually cheated on you. Maybe that person is a lot of things and cheated on you. It’s like the shame of staying, now that you can go you’ve got to get out.”

This leads Pinkett Smith stating that she understands Perel’s perspective because of what’s occurred in her own marriage:

“I’m asked a lot about, ‘Is there infidelity in your relationship with Will?’” And it’s like, ‘No, but there’ve been other betrayals of the heart that have been far bigger than I could even think in regards to an infidelity situation.’”

Previously, Pinkett Smith has stated that she would never end her marriage under any circumstances:

“What is the thing about Will could do to make me not love him? That would make me abandon him? I can’t think of one. I’m sorry. Except if he did something bad to the kids – now we’ve got a problem.”
