Jermaine Dupri Defends Kanye West’s Sunday Service: “It’s not a cult!”
Super-producer Jermaine Durpi has officially been blessed by rapper/fellow producer Kanye West‘s Sunday Service! Kanye has been hosting his popular Sunday Services – a church-like gathering with a riveting choir sing-a-long – since late last year. Tastemakers and fans have found the star-studded shows so inspiring that he brought its spirit to this year’s Coachella Music Festival.
JD recently attended a service and raved about it on Instagram. He said:
“@jermainedupri If you love quality music,if you believe in God and really appreciate real singing, you must attend this service #sundayservice”
One of Jermaine Dupri’s followers accused Sunday Service of being a cult gathering – most likely due to the fact that secular songs are played at the spiritual event. @fuquay71 commented:
“Na this Cult Jam ain’t it”
JD clapped back in defense of his friend Kanye:
“@fuquay71 what you see here is pure talent, coming together to make something incredible no [cap emoji]”
In the clip, a choir gives a moving rendition of Kanye’s debut, “Through the Wire.” Ironically, soul singer Chaka Khan – whose song, “Through the Fire,” is sampled by Kanye – hates the song! Despite the song peaking at number 15 on the charts, she recently said had she known how he’d use her sample, she wouldn’t have approved it. Chaka said:
“When it came out…I was pissed. I thought it was a little insulting. Not insulting – I thought it was stupid! If I’d known he was gonna do that, I would have said, ‘Hell no.'”
Yikes!
