Oprah Winfrey Donates $13 Million To Morehouse College, Largest Endowment In The School’s History

Oprah Winfrey stays using her wealth for good. The latest recipient was none other than HBCU Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga.

She donated $13 million to the all-male school, which is the largest endowment in the history of Morehouse.

She surprised the school with the gift when she visited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program. Before her donation, the fund had $12 million. Now, it has $25 million.

Winfrey said,

“Seeing you young Oprah Winfrey scholars here today has moved me deeply. I am so proud of you, I’m proud of everybody in attendance at this school who is seeking to know more clearly who you are, the value you hold and how you will share that value with the rest of the world.”

“I was really surprised to learn that it’s been 30 years since I made that $12 million donation to Morehouse. And so today I would like to add $13 million to that.”

She also seemed to enjoy herself while on campus. She was gifted with roses, a special song, and a portrait!

The President of the school, David A. Thomas said of Winfrey’s donation,

“I’m grateful to Oprah Winfrey for her generosity. I am also feeling hopeful for Morehouse and what it has garnered in terms of philanthropic support with gifts like Oprah’s and Robert Smith’s. I am hopeful that this will also get others to step up with their support of Morehouse, but even more broadly, historically black colleges and universities.”

One of her scholars, senior Nathan Rolle, added,

“I’ve looked up to Mrs. Winfrey my entire life. This day is the highlight of my Morehouse experience.”

Morehouse students have been getting lots of love and funds lately. Winfrey’s historic donation comes after Robert Smith owed to pay the student loan debt for the 2019 graduates. The billionaire kept his promise with a $34 million donation to Morehouse in September.
