Janelle Monae Possibly Comes Out As ‘Non-Binary’
Janelle Monae’s sexual orientation has been a topic of conversation for quite some time.
Now, Janelle Monae just sparked more conversation with a tweet.
Janelle Monae shared a GIF from a Twitter user who added the caption,
“There is absolutely nothing better than living outside the gender binary. #IAmNonbinary”
Janelle suggested that she is also non-binary, one who doesn’t identify with the male or female genders and tweeted:
“#IAmNonbinary”

Janelle Monae first alluded that there was an attraction to men and women in the album Dirty Computer that included multiple gender-fluid themes.
Janelle spoke on opening up about her sexuality and said,
“I was terrified. I thought people were gonna say, ‘Oh, she’s doing this as a publicity stunt.’ I thought I wasn’t gonna be able to go back home and be at all the barbecues. I had anxiety. And a lot of it was just untrue. It was my fear of what people were gonna say. And I’m thankful that I didn’t allow that fear to get in the way of my freedom.”
“To be young, queer, and black in America means that you can be misunderstood. You can be hated. It also means that you can be celebrated and loved. And I think there’s a lot at stake when you’re living out loud in that way. One thing I’ve realized even more was that when you walk in your truth, you can inspire and encourage people to walk in theirs…I think people are looking for that validation. When they’re trying to talk to their parents and their parents don’t see that representation out in the real world and people being accepted like that — it’s foreign to them, and I think that by being the example, we make it a little easier for kids to be able to talk to their loved ones about it.”
Janelle’s possible announcement comes after singer Sam Smith made a similar one. Sam Smith said last year:

Sam Smith
“I have a few friends and people in my team who are non-binary and they’re really teaching me stuff I didn’t know before. It’s wonderful…Ever since I was a little boy, ever since I was a little human, I didn’t feel comfortable being a man really. Some days I’ve got my manly side and some days I’ve got my womanly side.”
