The website for Angel City–which is a working title, with the official name being announced at the end of the year, highlights the founding investors of the new organization boasting several recognizable names. Among the investors are award-winning actresses America Ferrera, Uzo Aduba, Jennifer Garner, Eva Longoria, and Reddit founder, Alexis Ohanian, Sr. (Olympia’s father, and husband to Serena Williams).
Alexis Ohanian said in a statement,
“I am proud to be a part of this wonderful group working to bring a women’s professional football club to Los Angeles. Chiefly, because I’m a fan of the game, but also because I believe there is massive potential for the sport and it’s been undervalued by too many people for far too long.”
“As someone who spends hours kicking around a football with my two-year-old daughter, I want her to have a front row seat to this revolution. I’m personally investing on behalf of my family because creating more opportunities in women’s sports is important to my wife and me, and we want to be a part of making a better future for our daughter.”
Serena Williams and her 2-year-old daughter now join the ranks of several celebrities who partly take ownership of professional sports teams.
Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith, purchased a percentage of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2011, Jennifer Lopez and then-husband, Marc Anthony, became part owners of the Miami Dolphins in 2009. Rapper Jay-Z briefly owned a percentage of Brooklyn Nets until he sold his share in 2013 so that he could become a sports agent.
