NeNe Leakes & Mariah Huq Fans Launch Petition To Boycott Bravo For ‘Disrespecting’ & ‘Devaluing’ Them
Some fans of the popular network Bravo aren’t too happy with the alleged treatment some of its reality stars have been receiving and they’re definitely letting it be known. Recently a petition calling for viewers to boycott Bravo has surfaced online. The petition says that it’s “putting Bravo on notice” for its alleged malice treatment of two of its black stars NeNe Leakes and Mariah Huq.
The petition states
“Both ladies have been greatly disrespected, under appreciated and devalued right before our eyes. While this network has several African American talents, it is these two who have played significant and pivotal roles in the networks ongoing success. In the case of Mariah Huq, she is the only African American female show creator, executive producer and lead cast member. While this is a historical step, even this would not have come to fruition but for the contributions of NeNe Leakes within this network.”
It continues:
“NeNe has cleared a path for “reality stars” to segue way into the acting world and having “actors and musicians” flock to the reality world. So much so a network executive has stepped down to become talent on a show that was also a creative contribution from NeNe Leakes. NeNe has given so much to this network only to be devalued when it comes to other opportunities within the network in comparison to non black talent. Such as show development opportunities, spin offs, creative control and executive producing options. We have witnessed her sacrifice her physical health, have her mental health jeopardized, and her spiritual well-being tested. It is also evident that your disciplinary actions are far more stringent when it comes to your black talent. This is not acceptable and needs to be more balanced.”
The petition also states:
“Bravo we the fans are aware of our power and how a lack of our viewership would be a detriment to the future success of said network. Fans we ask that you sign this petition and stand in support of equality for NeNe and Mariah as well as all African American talent on this network.”
As of now, the petition is about 100 signatures away from reaching its goal of getting 1,500 people to sign. In a now-deleted tweet, NeNe Leakes responded to the petition and said
“Aww, you guys are sweet! Thank you.”
Both NeNe Leakes and Mariah Huq have previously spoken out against the treatment they’ve received from Bravo. This past July Mariah Huq shared exclusively with The Jasmine Brand about how she feels she’s been wronged by the network.
“I am a little taken aback. I do believe that I have not been treated the way my counterparts have and all I wanted is just to be treated equally and I just want equal rights as my white male counterparts. Hell, I just want to be respected and treated decently as a cast member I don’t even get that. I’m treated worse and they did it in front of the world.”
She also spoke on the discrimination she feels she’s received from Bravo for being Muslim
“They have treated me horribly so to the extent that they would not even allow me to wear a hijab when I wanted to do my confessionals. When we go on trips and when I went to Savannah I was upset, not because of any of the women initially, they only had pork to eat, so for me its more about creating change for the next people and letting them know you’re not going to just hijack my show and not give me anything and not allow me to be a part of the growth…it just happened once or twice my counterpart just said that he would gag I was gonna do it [wear the hijab] in confessional I said I wanted to show people the other side that it can exist it’s hard as hell. If you go back and look at ‘Married to Medicine’ I’ve always been covered for the most part. You go back and look at it I didn’t cover my head but they even put me in situations. I’m gonna give you an example he told me no I couldn’t wear it he would gag and faint and I would never be on TV again.”
Mariah also hinted that she plans on taking legal action against the network.
NeNe Leakes recently opened up about her own issues with Bravo and how they are delaying her from signing a contract for the upcoming season. She said,
“Every single season, when it ends- for at least he last three to four seasons – I’ve been dealing with this. Going back and forth? It’s not me; it’s them. I know a lot of people think it’s me. [They say,] ‘NeNe holds out ’til the last minute…’ A negotiation does take time, but I cannot move their pens any faster than they move them themselves…there’s so much issues with NeNe…one of the issues we have addressed that one side said to my side is, ‘She calls herself a queen- the HBIC. And, quite frankly, we are tired of hearing that.’ Well, I am a queen. I am Gregg’s queen. I am Brent’s queen. I am Bryson’s queen, and I am a Black queen. So, you won’t be not hearing that anytime soon…I wonder did Porsha get that same call. ‘Cause I know for two reunions, she has worn a crown. So I wonder if she considers herself a queen.”
