Donald Trump Threatens To Defund California Schools If They Add ‘The 1619 Project’ Into The Curriculum
Donald Trump seems to be putting his foot down over reports that California schools are incorporating a curriculum based on The New York Times’ 1619 Project.
The 1619 Project began in August 2019, which also marked the 400th anniversary of slavery. The series is a collection of essays, stories, and original poems from writers that examine how slavery framed every aspect of society, including music, law, and education.
The controversial project now has Donald Trump threatening to take away federal funding if the Department of Education finds that California will, indeed, incorporate a new curriculum into its schools based on the 1619 Project.
Recently, Donald Trump responded to a tweet that claimed American will be unrecognizable if California added The 1619 Project into public schools. He tweeted,
“Department of Education is looking at this. If so, they will not be funded!”
The President, who was a devout supporter of reopening schools across the U.S. that have been closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, has previously stated the importance of education.

The threat that the president has made to defund public schools did not sit well with a number of Twitter users. Catch some of their reactions below.

A little less than a year after the release of the 1619 Project, a partnership between Oprah Winfrey and Lionsgate was announced to convert the series into TV shows and featured films.
