Bill Cosby Fired Lisa Bonet From ‘A Different World’ Because She Got Pregnant, Says Lenny Kravitz: He Relationship With Bill Was Tense
At one time it seemed the whole world, particularly the Black community, looked up to the Huxtable family as The Cosby Show as a whole was held in such high regard. The show did so well that a spinoff was created to follow the journey of Denise Huxtable into her college years on “A Different World.” The show lasted 6 seasons from 1987-1993, but Lisa Bonet’s character Denise left after season 1.
Lisa’s ex-husband Lenny Kravitz is providing more information behind her departure in his new memoir, “Let Love Rule.” According to Kravitz, when he and Lisa Bonet were expecting their daughter, (now 31-year-old Zoe Kravitz), Bonet and the show’s producer Debbie Allen called Cosby in for a meeting. Seemingly aware of the situation, Cosby allegedly said,
“You’re here to tell me you’re pregnant, aren’t you?”
Reportedly Debbie Allen explained that she liked the idea of Bonet’s character, Denise Huxtable, daughter of Dr. Cliff Huxtable, played by Cosby, deciding to raise a child on her own with the support of her friends.
According to Kravitz’s account, Bill Cosby didn’t respond but said he’d think about it. Allegedly a few days later he called back with his decision, saying,
“Lisa Bonet is pregnant, but Denise Huxtable is not.”
She was subsequently pulled from the show.
The Cosby Show that eventually lended itself to the creation of A Different World, was a staple example of a well-off Black family that the Black community was heavily invested in for eight seasons.
After birthing her daughter, Lisa Bonet was reportedly allowed to come back on to The Cosby Show but eventually left for good in 1991, citing creative differences.
Lenny Kravitz reports that Lisa’s “relationship with Bill was tense and ultimately untenable” after he fired her from A Different World.
