Meghan Markle Reacts After Private Investigator Reveals He Obtained Her & Her Family’s Personal Information For A British Tabloid

The fallout between Meghan Markle and the media in the U.K. continues as a private investigator admitted to getting her and her family’s personal information for a British tabloid.

Daniel Hanks, a U.S. private investigator said during an interview with BBC that he obtained very personal details for The Sun. The information included Meghan Markle’s social security number, address, and phone number. He said he wanted to speak on it

“to clear my conscience.”

He continued,

“I’m deeply sorry for what I did…and I’m available if your lawyers need to talk to me. I’m ready to give you what I know. Supply you with any information. I just wish this had never happened.”

While he said he received some of the details legally, that didn’t hold true when it came to getting her social security numbers, which he referred to as “the key to the kingdom.”

A spokesperson for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry said,

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex feel that today is an important moment of reflection for the media industry and society at large, as this investigative report shows that the predatory practices of days past are still ongoing, reaping irreversible damage for families and relationships.”

They added,

“They are grateful to those working in media who stand for upholding the values of journalism, which are needed now more than ever before.”

The Sun said in a statement that he

“was not tasked to do anything illegal or breach any privacy laws — indeed he was instructed clearly in writing to act lawfully and he signed a legal undertaking that he would do so.”

The publication added that it didn’t ask for  Meghan Markle’s security number and didn’t use the information Hanks gave “for any unlawful practice.”

Meghan Markle’s battle with British tabloids has been a lengthy one. She recently received a victory in a lawsuit against Mail On Sunday after it published portions of a personal letter she wrote her father, Thomas Markle, after she married Prince Harry. Meghan Markle responded to being granted summary judgment and said,

“These tactics (and those of their sister publications MailOnline and the Daily Mail) are not new; in fact, they’ve been going on for far too long without consequence.”

“For these outlets, it’s a game. For me and so many others, it’s real life, real relationships, and very real sadness,” she added. “The damage they have done and continue to do runs deep.”
