Laverne Cox Receives Apology From Universal For Using Male Actor To Dub Her Voice In ‘Promising Young Woman’
Actress Laverne Cox has received an apology from Universal Pictures International for using a male actor to “dub” her voice in the Italian-language version of ‘Promising Young Woman.’
On behalf of Universal Pictures International, a spokesperson said this:
“We are deeply grateful to Laverne and the transgender community for opening our eyes to a bias that neither we nor many in our industry had recognized.”
Universal Pictures International spokesperson continued to say:
“While there was no malicious intent behind the mistake, we are working diligently to fix it. We have begun redubbing Ms. Cox’s voice with female actors in our international territories and are pushing back release dates to ensure the correct version is available. We are sorry for the pain caused but are thankful that we can address the situation on this film and prevent similar mistakes from happening again on future projects.”
Italian viewers took to social media outraged by the masculine tone they heard coming from the character played by Laverne Cox.
Voice actor Vittorio Schisano, the voice behind the trans character Natalie on the show ‘Big Mouth’, revealed to The Guardian that she doesn’t know any other trans voice actors in Italy and wasn’t asked to read for Cox’s role in ‘Promising Young Woman.’ Although Victoria Schisano was not asked to read for Cox’s role in ‘Promising Young Woman,’ she’s previously dubbed Cox before on Netflix’s ‘Amend: The Fight for America.’
Universal Pictures International is moving forward with pushing back the release date for the project to re-dub Laverne Cox’s character with a female voice. Laverne Cox has yet to comment.
