Garcelle Beauvais Educates ‘RHOBH’ Co-Star Kathy Hilton After She Claims Michael Jackson Told Her ‘I Don’t See Color’ + Hilton Says ‘I Told Him We Don’t Either’
Race is becoming a recurring topic on shows like The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and The Real Housewives of New York as both casts have welcomed their first Black, full-time stars recently.
Eboni K. Williams is currently in her first season of RHONY, and race has been a touchy subject of conversation for several episodes. During an EXCLUSIVE interview with theJasmineBRAND, she shared her thoughts on criticism that she speaks about race too much on the reality show.
Now, race is coming up on another franchise – RHOBH.
The cast had dinner at Kyle Richards’ home during a recent episode, and Kathy Hilton mentioned Sutton Stracke and Crystal Kung Minkoff’s previous disagreement where Sutton said she “didn’t see color.”
Kathy Hilton, mother to socialites Paris Hilton and Nickky Hilton, revealed that she agreed with the controversial perspective and name-dropped the late King of Pop.
“You know, Michael Jackson and I grew up together and Michael said to me, ‘Kathy, I don’t see color.’ I said, ‘Well, neither do we.”
That’s when Garcelle Beauvais, who served as the first Black star on RHOBH when she joined season 10, chimed in. She said,
“I know you can see me as a woman, you can see me as a mother, you can see me as a friend, but if you don’t see color, then you don’t see me.”
She later told cameras in a confessional that she knew Kathy Hilton meant no harm with what she said and has love for everyone, but Garcelle Beauvais explained that she needed more.
“Now I need you to see color, I’m still a Black woman at the end of the day. That shows up before my intelligence, before my fashion, that shows up before anything when I walk in a room and I need you to see that.”
Kyle Richards attempted to defend Kathy Hilton and said she belives Kathy just meant she sees everyone as the same. Garcelle Beauvais responded,
“But we’re not. We’re not equal. We are not treated equally as you are. We should be. Absolutely, we should be, but we’re not.”
She asked her co-stars if they ever had to have a conversation with their children on what to do if they were stopped by the police. They shook their heads “no.”Garcelle said that wasn’t her experience and that she’s worried about her son, Oliver, getting stopped by cops “because in an instant, he’s not my son, he’s just a Black man and this world doesn’t see the value of Black men.”
Kathy later said she doesn’t want to have to “sit down with a little 4-year-old” and “point things out to them with these innocent minds” concerning race, but Garcelle said she doesn’t have the luxury not to talk about it.
“I agree, you shouldn’t have to go to a 4-year-old and say you need to be … it’s a lot for a 4-year-old, I get it. But I’m going to say that to a 4-year-old who’s Black.”
“It’s a privilege not to have that conversation. I wish I had that choice and I don’t.
