J.R. Smith Enrolls At North Carolina A&T & Hopes To Join The Golf Team

Former professional basketball player J.R. Smith is ready to try his hand at an entirely new sport. J.R. Smith, full name Earl Joseph Smith III, has enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University and is seeking a degree in liberal studies. While at the HBCU the 35-year-old athlete has plans to join the Aggies golf team. J.R. Smith was drafted by the Hornets straight out of high school in 2004. During a recent interview, he explained why he made the decision to get his undergraduate degree and pursue a chance at playing collegiate golf.

“Ray Allen kind of convinced me. We had a little golf trip in the [Dominican Republic] and he was talking about some of the things he was doing about going back to school and challenging yourself and stuff for us athletes. I really took heed to and decided to go back.”

He continued,

“One of the best liberal arts studies programs is at A&T and it just so happens I got deep roots in Carolina.”

He added that he’s still trying to “figure out” if he has eligibility to play on the University’s golf team. According to ESPN, J.R. Smith is currently waiting to hear back from the NCAA with an answer.
