Elton John Says Young Thug Freestyles Better Than Eminem
Elton John is getting candid about his views on certain rappers. As previously reported, the 74-year-old artist is gearing up to release his new album, The Lockdown Sessions, that will ll feature artists like Nicki Minaj, Lil Nas X, and Young Thug. In a recent interview, Elton John said that he was blown away by Young Thug’s freestyling skills in the studio. In fact, he stated that he believed that Young Thug’s free styling was better than his longtime friend, Eminem’s.
“I mean, I’ve seen Marshall [Mathers] do it in Detroit, but I’ve never seen someone like Thug come in and do that. In the end, I had to leave because I think he felt a bit intimidated that I was there and I just wanted him to relax. But it’s just an amazing moment in my musical life… I have no understanding of how rap records are put together and it’s fascinating to watch.”
Young Thug sampled Elton John’s, Rocket Man, for his 2018 song, High but the pair met years before. The 30-year-old rapper asked to get to know Elton John better and John recalled the meeting with him and said,
“He wanted to meet me…and we shot the breeze for 40 minutes. He said, ‘What do you think? What advice would you give me?’ I said, ‘Did you sing in the choir?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, of course I sang in the choir. Gospel choir.’ I said, ‘Sing more. Don’t just rap, sing more, because the mixture of rap and musicianship and melody is what really makes rap take off.’ And he’s doing that now.”
Although John thinks Young Thug freestyles better than Eminem, it doesn’t stop the star from talking about his close relationship with the Detroit native. In his 2019 memoir, Me, he revealed that he’s Eminem’s AA sponsor and that they have a very close and comfortable relationship.
“I’m Eminem’s AA sponsor. Whenever I ring to check in on him, he always greets me the same way: ‘Hello, you c*nt’, which I guess is very Eminem.”
