Dave Chappelle – LGBTQ+ Justice Orgs Want Comedian’s Netflix Special Pulled For Remarks Against Trans People
Dave Chappelle is facing backlash from a few LGBTQ+ justice organizations for comments made on his latest Netflix stand-up. On Oct. 5 Netflix dropped Dave Chappelle’s newest special, The Closer, on its streaming platform. During the comedic performance Dave Chappelle, 48, seemingly defends rapper DaBaby and author J.K. Rowling for controversial comments they’ve previously made about against LGBTQ+ community. The comedian also speaks about the criticism he received for jokes about the trans community that is featured in his previous Netflix specials.
Following the release of The Closer, GLAAD and The National Black Justice Coalition released statements calling out Chappelle for his jokes. GLAAD said,
“Chappelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities.”
The National Black Justice Coalition urged Netflix to remove the special from its platform.
“With 2021 on track to be the deadliest year on record for transgender people in the United States — the majority of whom are Black transgender people — Netflix should know better. Perpetuating transphobia perpetuates violence. Netflix should immediately pull ‘The Closer’ from its platform and directly apologize to the transgender community.”

Jaclyn Moore, who is an executive producer/writer for Netflix’s Dear White People, also called out the popular streaming network for Chappelle’s jokes.
“I will not work with them as long as they continue to put out and profit from blatantly and dangerously transphobic content.”

Despite the current backlash Chappelle is receiving, he seems to be unfazed. The comedian was recently spotted leaving Peppermint Club in Hollywood last night (Thursday, Oct. 6) and was asked if he hates the LGBTQ+ community. He didn’t answer the question but he appeared to be in good spirits with a big smile on his face. As the vehicle pulled off he reportedly said,
“Dumb-a** questions.”
