Nas Recalls Crying With DMX On The Set Of ‘Belly’: We Formed A Brotherhood
Nas reminisced on his time filming the cult classic film, Belly, with the late rapper, DMX. The Hype Williams directed film premiered in 1998 with a star-studded cast and it’s left a lasting impression on the If I Ruled The Rule rapper.

In an episode of Desus & Mero on Showtime, Nas, 48, recalls when the film came out and says:
“That was a great time, man. ‘Cause to come from music and go to Times Square, to the premiere and see our names on the marquee…growing up in New York and Times Square, 42nd Street was like the truth. Today, it’s Disney World but back then it was crazy. So, to see my name there, that was like, alright, I could quit on everything now. I did it all.”
He goes on to remember a moment of vulnerability he shared with his fellow castmate and friend, DMX. Nas said,
“It’ll never be the same because our brother’s not here, DMX you know rest in peace. We formed a brotherhood. I didn’t have to see him or he didn’t have to call me, but when we saw each other though, it was that! Even working on the film, we cried.”

He continues and says,
“We were at the tunnel outside doing a scene and I was like, ‘You feel that, bro you know what’s happening?’ He was like, ‘Yeah.’ And he started talking to me and he’s crying and now I’m crying. He was talking with that, ‘Grrr.’ I was like, ‘This man’s energy is something else.”
DMX passed away on April 9th due to a cocaine-induced heart attack. Nas spoke about the fact that DMX was loved and respected while he was alive contrary to the speculation that he wasn’t. He said,
“People need to understand, DMX had more love than most rappers would ever see. People said when he passed, ‘Where was the love when he was alive?’ You gotta be kidding me! He had more love than 98 percent of rappers would ever have. He walked through any hood, sold millions of records, he had an incredible movie career. Kids ain’t doing that today! I wish he was still here with us, but in this life, he saw more love than 1,000 rappers put together.”
