In a new interview, the 36-year-old opens up about why she decided to end Insecure after its fifth season. The Breakfast Club’s DJ Envy opens up the conversation and asks,
“Why are you ending Insecure?”
Issa Rae responds and says,
“I mean since season one I knew I wanted to have 5 seasons and I talked to Prentice about it and he was like ‘How long you wanna go for’ and I was like 5 and he was like ‘okay sounds about right.’ But it felt like that’s the right amount of time to tell a concise story.”

She continues,
“I like shows that I can watch with endings and I like to leave when I feel…”
Co-host Angela Yee interjected and said,
“At your high.”
Issa agrees and says,
“Yeah like don’t overstay your welcome is a big motto and also just like I’ve been saying professionally, it’s one thing to be a part of a show that you love but like asking people to give five years – actors, writers – whatever it is of their life to the show felt like… ya know it feels like a lot.”

She goes on to say,
“I felt like it ended at the right time, like we all still love each other… people get other opportunities so I feel like that was also just timeline wise good. I don’t want people to feel like ‘ugh I wanna shoot this movie but I gotta f*cking shoot ‘Insecure’ for season 7.'”
