Will Smith Says He ‘Fell In Love’ W/ ‘Six Degrees Of Separation’ Co-Star Stockard Channing While Married To Sheree Zampino
Will Smith is speaking on his past infatuation with Stockard Channing!
Ahead of Will Smith‘s memoir–Will–being released, the actor has unveiled an excerpt from the highly-anticipated publication. In the snippet, Will Smith dishes on how he fell in love with Grease actress Stockard Channing back in the early 1990s. At the time, Will Smith and Stockard Channing were filming Six Degrees of Separation–and he was married to Sheree Zampino!
Will Smith married Sheree Zampino back in 1992. The pair welcomed a son named maned Willard “Trey” Smith III later that year, and they divorced in 1995. Will Smith went on to marry his current wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, in 1997.
In the excerpt, Will Smith initially reveals:
“Sheree and I were in the first few months of our marriage with a brand-new baby and for Sheree, I can imagine that this experience was unsettling to say the least. She’d married a guy named Will Smith and now she was living with a guy named Paul Poitier [from ‘Six Degrees of Separation’]. And to make matters worse, during shooting I fell in love with Stockard Channing.”
The 53-year-old actor continued:
“After the film wrapped, Sheree and Trey and I moved back to L.A. Our marriage was off to a rocky start. I found myself desperately yearning to see and speak to Stockard.”
This isn’t the first time Will Smith has shared this sentiment. Back in 2015, he stated:
“With Six Degrees of Separation, I got a taste early of the dangers of going too far for a character. My character was in love with Stockard Channing’s character. And I actually fell in love with Stockard Channing… [When] the movie was over and I went home, I was dying to see Stockard. I was like, ‘Oh no! What have I done?’ That was my last experience with Method acting, where you’re reprogramming your mind. You’re actually playing around with your psychology. You teach yourself to like things and to dislike things.”
He added:
“It is a really dangerous place when you get good at it. But once I had that experience, I was like ‘No more Method acting.’ For ‘Six Degrees’, I wanted to perform well so badly that I was spending six and seven and eight days in character before shooting, and you have to be careful with that.”
In response to Will Smith‘s revelation, Stockard Channing said:
“Well, I’m very flattered. That’s a wonderful thing… I adored him from the first time I laid eyes on him because I thought he was genuinely sweet. I felt very protective of him, because it was his first big job. It’s amazing for me to hear that he felt that way, I’m delighted.”
Will Smith‘s memoir will be released on Tuesday, Nov. 9th.
