Adele Says She Was ‘Embarrassed’ After Divorce & Experienced Anxiety Attacks, Reacts To Weight Loss Backlash: I’m Either Too Big Or Too Small
Adele opened up about her personal life during a recent sit-down!
Yesterday (Sunday, Nov. 14th), CBS aired an Adele-focused special, dubbed One Night Only. The 2-hour TV special was largely centered on an Adele concert, though it was also intercut with an interview between the 33-year-old singer and Oprah Winfrey.
During her interview with Oprah, Adele dished on her divorce from Simon Konecki–a theme that’s expected to come up in her upcoming 30 album. She first shared her initial remorse over the relationship ending in divorce, saying:
“I’ve been obsessed with a nuclear family my whole life because I never came from one. From a very young age [I] promised myself that, when I had kids, we’d stay together. And I tried for a really, really long time.”
She added:
“I take marriage very seriously… and it seems like I don’t now. Almost like I disrespected it by getting married and then divorced so quickly. I’m embarrassed because it was so quick.”
Adele also said that, while her divorce stirred up negative emotions, it also inspired her to exercise more–helping with her famous weight loss:
“I had the most terrifying anxiety attacks after I left my marriage. They paralyzed me completely and made me so confused because I wouldn’t be able to have any control over my body. [Going to the gym] really contributed towards me getting my mind right.”
While on the subject of her weight loss, Adele also addressed some fans’ backlash to her slimming down:
“I’m not shocked or even fazed by it because my body has been objectified my entire career. I’m either too big or too small; I’m either hot or I’m not. But it’s not my job to validate how people feel about their bodies. I feel bad that it’s made anyone feel horrible about themselves–but that’s not my job. I’m trying to sort my own life out. I can’t add another worry. “
The “Easy On Me” singer then proceeded to gush about her relationship with Rich Paul, recounting their first date together:
“We went out for dinner, which he says was a business meeting. I’m like, a business meeting about what? We wouldn’t be having a meeting about business. And then it was just the first time we’d hung out only on our own, and not with other friends and stuff like that. So that was a very natural way. I think that’s how people would normally meet each other, like, in real life.”
She continued, saying her relationship with Rich Paul helped her learn to “love herself.” Adele also dished on the sports agent’s personality:
“He’s just hilarious. Oh, he’s so funny. Yeah, and very smart.”
Continuing to speak on her personal life, Adele also revealed she and her father–who walked out on her at 2 years old–reconnected shortly before his death. She initially recounted:
“I had absolutely zero expectations of anybody, because I learned not to have them through my dad. He was the reason I haven’t fully accessed what it is to be in a loving, loving relationship with somebody.”
Adele then said that, after her father became sick, she and him began the process of reconciling through music. During that period, she played him her musical catalogue–as he said it was “too painful” to hear her work before then. Recalling the experience, Adele stated:
“It was amazing for me and him. I think he could listen to me sing [about my pain] but not saying it–we are very similar like that. His favorites were all of my favorites, which was amazing. And he was proud of me for doing it. So it was it was very, very healing [and] when he died, it was literally like the wound closed up.”
It’s also worth pointing out that–during the concert portion of the special–Adele helped a fan propose to his girlfriend. The couple was brought out on stage with the unsuspecting woman wearing a blindfold and noise-cancelling headphones. She was then surprised after taking off the blindfold and headphones, ultimately accepting her boyfriend’s marriage proposal. Afterwards, Adele came from the shadows to congratulate the couple before singing “Make You Feel My Love.”
