MC Lyte Opens Up About Her Divorce: ‘In The Very Beginning I Was Very Distraught’, Says Estranged Husband Does Not Want To Sign Divorce Papers
Rap pioneer, MC Lyte is getting candid about the emotional struggles of divorce. During a recent episode of The Real, the 51-year-old rapper/actress discussed her divorce from husband John Wyche after only three years of marriage. She explained that while the pair announced their divorce in 2020, she is still going through the process as the divorce is still not finalized.
“I’m actually still going through it. When the press got a hold of it, I think people thought we were [divorced]. I had just filed and so we’re still going through it right now.”
MC Lyte expresses there are several emotional phases when it comes to a break up.
“I think in the very beginning I was very distraught. I feel like there are phases whenever a relationship is ending whether you’re married or not. It’s that first phase of, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got to make this work for us’. Then it’s like, ‘Oh my God I’ve got to make this work for everybody else involved. The family, if there are children, people who flew all the way to wherever to see you married.'”

She goes on to say that while divorce is difficult in the beginning, it doesn’t make you a failure.
“It’s hard in the beginning but you realize to have happiness doesn’t mean you have to remain together and it doesn’t mean that you are a failure because the marriage failed. It’s all ego. You just have to be able to let go.”
As previously reported, the ‘Cold Rock a Party’ rapper filed for divorce from her husband John Wyche in August 2020 after three years of marriage. MC Lyte reportedly cited irreconcilable differences as the reason the pair has decided to call it quits. She met her estranged husband on Match.com and they married in August of 2017 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
When asked why the divorce process is taking so long, MC Lyte revealed,
“He doesn’t want to sign the papers.”
