Mariah Carey Files Counterclaim, Wants Her Brother to Reimburse Legal Fees Spent Fighting Defamation Lawsuit
The Emancipation of MiMi continues…
Grammy-award winning singer Mariah Carey wants a judge to rule that her brother, Morgan Carey, must reimburse her for legal fees accrued fighting a defamation lawsuit he filed against her in 2021 over her memoir The Meaning Of Mariah Carey. The “Obsessed” artist reportedly believes she will win the case, because the parts of her book Morgan Carey‘s lawsuit claims were used to defame him weren’t published “with actual malice” and were “true or substantially true.”
As previously reported, Morgan Carey claimed he suffered emotional distress after Mariah falsely painted him in her memoir as a violent person when she detailed an alleged fight between him and their father. He also took offense to Mariah alluding that he tried to extort her and for writing that he had been in the system.
Overall, his portrayal reportedly led him to suffer “extreme mental anguish” and “serious reputation damage.” According to court documents,
“[Morgan] brings this action more in sorrow and disappointment in his sister’s betrayals and malicious falsehoods than in anger at them. He is by no means envious of his sister’s enormous artistic and personal success, has enjoyed his own successes both professional and personal and has always wished her well.”
Despite Justice Barbara Jaffe dismissing 14 allegations made by Morgan, she previously ruled that he could take his sister to court for defamation over two passages that claimed he had sold drugs and had “been in the system.”
Maliah sister, Alison Carey, also filed a lawsuit against the “We Belong Together” singer in 2021 for alleging that she, as a 12-year-old, was drugged by her sister and that she once threw boiling tea on her.
