Will Smith’s Mother, Carolyn Smith, Speaks Out About Son’s Oscars Outburst: I’ve Never Seen Him Do That
Will Smith’s mother, Carolyn Smith, sat down with a news station to discuss her son’s wild Oscars night.
Just like any mother, Carolyn was elated when Will, 50, won a golden statuette for his performance in King Richard. Of her second child’s achievement after more than two decades of acting, she said:
“I know how he works, how hard he works…I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting. When I heard the name, I was just, ‘Yes!'”

Will’s relatives met at Carolyn’s home to watch the ceremony on TV. They would’ve never guessed that, prior to accepting his award, Chris Rock would make an offensive joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith, prompting Will to slap him.

Carolyn certainly didn’t expect her “cool” and “collected” son to do such a thing. She stated:
“He is a very even, people person. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime… I’ve never seen him do that.”
The legendary actor’s younger sister, Ellen Smith, said that Will has struggled with being in the spotlight throughout his career. However, he has always managed to come out on top. She added:
“I’ve had conversations with him, and it like really kind of broke my heart listening to the things he’s said he had to go through to get to where he is.”
Despite Will’s slip-up, his family is proud of his accomplishments. His mother said:
“I am proud of him being him.”
