Ludacris To Be Granted Honorary Degree From Georgia State University

Congratulations are in order for Ludacris. The 44-year-old rapper and actor will be accepting his degree this spring.

Georgia State University will reportedly award Ludacris, born Christopher Bridges, with an honorary degree at the school’s spring commencement. On April 13, the university announced they are awarding Ludacris an honorary Bachelor of Science degree in Music Management, following the approval of the Georgia Board of Regents.

According to a statement from Georgia State, the degree honors his

“support of the university’s creative media arts and law programs, his commitment to the metro Atlanta community, and his philanthropic endeavors.”

After high school, the Atlanta native attended Georgia State in 1998 and 1999 before he signed a record deal with Def Jam. Georgia State President M. Brian Blake, who nominated the Grammy award-winning rapper, wrote in a statement,

“We are proud that Chris Bridges got his start at Georgia State. He has gone on to become a cultural and philanthropic icon, representing Atlanta and giving back in many ways. Our students in the Creative Media Industries Institute (CMII) and College of Law have benefited from learning from his career, and we’re excited to honor him as a member of the Panther family.”

Ludacris has been actively engaged with the school over the years, acting as a artist-in-residence at Georgia State’s Creative Media Industries Institute in 2019. He mentored students and worked with professors with entrepreneurship in the music and film industry. In addition, he has worked with the school’s College of Law for a course titled “The Legal Life of Ludacris,” the curriculum which covered his business accolades as a rapper/actor/record executive/restaurateur.

“This is a dream come true for me,” said Ludacris.

“Georgia State helped me get my start, and I am so honored and excited to share this milestone with the world.” 

Ludacris has since taken to his Instagram account to commemorate the milestone. He captioned the post,

“MY MOMMA IS SHEDDING REAL TEARS [praise emoji] when I put “what’s your fantasy” out in 2000 I had to choose between leaving school or a career in Music. History has already been made on one front [microphone & music symbol emoji] and NOW it’s about
to be made on ANOTHER [graduation emoji] Everything comes full circle [circle emoji] THIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE FOR ME [prayer hands emoji] THANK
YOU GA STATE #atlanta” 

The commencement ceremony is open to the public to attend on May 4 at 9 a.m. at Center Parc Stadium or can be streamed live online.
