Wanda Sykes Says ‘Oh Hell No’ When Asked If She Will Host Oscars Again Following Will Smith & Chris Rock Drama
Wanda Sykes is OUT!
The comedian served as a co-host of the 94th Academy Awards alongside fellow comedian Amy Schumer and actress Regina Hall. Despite calling it an amazing night, Wanda Sykes can do without having such an important role in the future.
In response to whether she’d be interested in doing so again, she said,
“Oh, hell no.”
She continued,
“I shouldn’t say it like that. You know what, it was an amazing honor and I think it’s something that you want to do. You do it once… I don’t know if I would want to do it again. It’s a huge job, and it took a lot of people to clean me up.”
While the Oscars are meant to celebrate the best and the brightest in the film industry, the March 27 ceremony was quickly hi-jacked by the drama involving Will Smith and Chris Rock.
Will Smith, who took home his first Academy Award for best actor for his role in ‘King Richard,’ was not pleased when Chris Rock made a joke at the expense of his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. The joke was in reference to Jada Pinkett-Smith’s bald head, which she rocks as the result of having alopecia.
While Chris Rock was still on stage, Will Smith walked up and slapped him. He then walked back to his seat and shouted at the comedian to keep his wife’s name out of his
“f*cking mouth.”

Smith eventually resigned from the Oscars, a move that came not long before he was banned from attending any ceremonies for the next 10 years. In his resignation, he said,
“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”
The ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ star also saw several of his movie deals and endorsements be halted as a result of his actions.
While the incident has received mixed reviews, Wanda Sykes is among the celebrities who remain adamant that the slap was uncalled for. The comedian previously said she was still unsettled about the whole incident during a stop on her comedy tour in Orlando, Florida, on May 12.
Sykes said,
“I’m still traumatized. I can’t talk about it. I get emotional.”
She added,
“I couldn’t believe he was still sitting there, like an as*hole. Shouldn’t you be sitting there with a lawyer or LAPD, motherfu*ker? I hope he gets his sh*t together. Until then, f*ck him.”
It doesn’t appear that Rock and Smith have yet to publicly make amends.
