Issa Rae Shares Initial Concerns Over Naming Her New Series ‘Rap Sh!t’: I Anticipated That It Was A Tentative Title [VIDEO]

Following a five-season run of Issa Rae’s hit HBO series “Insecure,” the Emmy nominee is gearing up for the arrival of her brand new show “Rap Sh!t.”

The HBO comedy series follows the story of two former high school friends from Miami, Shawna (portrayed by actress Aida Osman) and Mia (portrayed by actress/rapper KaMillion) who reunite to form a rap group. The show will reportedly feature all original music written by actual rappers.

During a recent appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” entertainment mogul Issa Rae discussed her newest project “Rap Sh!t.” At one point in the interview, Jo-Issa Rae Diop, professionally known as Issa Rae, addressed the series name and the inspiration behind the show. When the television host asked the 37-year-old writer/producer if she knew the name of the show would be a problem, she explained:

“I did, yes. I anticipated that it was a tentative title, and then I talked to HBO legal, like what can we get away with, because we had an asterisk in the title and then we replaced it with an exclamation point, and they were like, ‘It’s totally fine.’ Like, TV Guide can print that.”

Issa continued:

“And so then it was like, yes, it’s out there, but now it’s on billboards and little kids are seeing it. And sorry, parents. But they can read, which is great.”

When discussing her inspiration behind the idea of the rap show, the “Insecure” creator said:

“I am a huge rap fan, and this idea has kind of been gestating for a while. I’ve always wanted to have something set in the music world, and this is just such an exciting time. Like, there’s so many dope female rappers who are out here killing it.”

Issa added:

“And one of my favorite producers, a male, happened to say that all women rap about now, is like, their vaginas. Like, it’s all the same, all the same. And I was like that’s not fair because men rap about the same thing all the time. And so that — that kind of double standard really interested me.”

As we previously reported, Issa recently dropped the trailer for the original comedy series “Rap Sh!t” and revealed the release date for the show, July 21. The first season of “Rap Sh!t” will have eight episodes in total, with the first two arriving on the day of the premiere.
