Meghan Markle Says British Tabloids Called Her Children ‘The N-Word’

Meghan Markle reveals why she wasn’t eager to share images of her children with British press!

During her time as an active member of the British royal family, the Duchess of Sussex was expected to release pictures of her now 3-year-old son, Archie, to the Royal Rota– which is the press pool that covers Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family. During a recent interview, Meghan Markle, 41, explained why she refused to give the british tabloids pictures of her son.

“There’s literally a structure by which if you want to release photos of your child, as a member of the family, you first have to give them to the Royal Rota (the U.K. media pool).”

She continued,

“Why would I give the very people that are calling my children the N-word a photo of my children before I can share with the people that love my children?”

Meghan added,

“You tell me how that makes sense and then I’ll play that game.”

According to The Duchess, she and her husband, Prince Harry, didn’t have any control over the @KensingtonRoyal Instagram account that they initially shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton.

One month before Archie was born, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry decided to start their own Instagram account, @sussexroyal, separate from their royal one, and posted photos of Archie there. They would continue to use that account to share their own news and photos — refusing to indulge in the “exchange game.”  However, after they stepped back as senior members of the royal family, they shut down the account because they could no longer use “royal” in their branding.

During her interview, The Duchess also weighed in on the “toxic” tabloid culture and how it negatively impacted two families. She said,

“Harry said to me, ‘I lost my dad in this process. It doesn’t have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that’s his decision.”

As previously reported, Prince Harry has had a strained relationship with both his brother, Prince William and father, Prince Charles amid marrying Meghan Markle and stepping down as Senior Members of the Royal Family.

Markle became the Duchess of Sussex when she and Harry tied the knot in May 2018 at Windsor Castle. The couple welcomed a son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor in 2019.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departures from royal duties began in 2020 over what they described as the British media’s intrusions and racist attitudes toward the former “Suits” star. The family now resides in Montecito, California.

Since becoming a member of the the longest reigning royal family in U.K. history, Meghan Markle has continuously battled the “optics” of her marriage. As the first Black woman married into the family, she underwent intense scrutiny from British media outlets. The Duchess opened up about her struggles adjusting to royal life and negative media coverage of her in the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, and again while interviewing with Oprah Winfrey back in 2021.
