Update: (Oct. 25, 2022): It looks like Steve Lacy didn’t unwarrantedly smash a fan’s phone after all. Initial reports claimed that after a fan threw their phone at the singer, he asked an innocent bystander to pass them their phone before breaking the device and storming off stage.

The 24-year-old faced backlash for seemingly breaking the phone of someone who didn’t throw the item at him on stage. However, some concertgoers have taken to the internet to defend the artist and shared video footage that tells a different story. In the recently uploaded clip, the device — which was seemingly a disposable camera — hit the singer and bounced off of him, landing in the crowd. He then asked an audience member to pass it back to him. In the footage, it’s clear that’s the item he smashed.

Steve Lacy addressed the situation on his IG and said,

“My show’s been fun as hell! Shoutout to the people not throwing disposable cameras at me and just coming to catch a vibe and connect. I had a really good time in NOLA last night. I hate that the beauty of the connection I have with so many people in the crowd gets lost when something negative happens.”

He added,

“I don’t believe I owe anyone an apology- maybe I could’ve reacted better? Sure. Always. I’m a student of life. But I’m a real person with real feelings and real reactions. I’m not a product or a robot. I am human.”

The “Bad Habit” singer was performing the song during the New Orleans stop of his Give You The World Tour on Monday (Oct. 24) when a fan apparently tossed their phone from the crowd and hit him in the torso. Steve Lacy seemed to not be bothered by the move at first, rightfully asking the audience to not throw “sh*t on” his “f*cking stage.”

However, things quickly took a turn. Steve Lacy then asked for a random person’s cell phone, and when they handed it to him, he reportedly smashed the device on the stage before walking off.

Many people in the crowd weren’t pleased with Steve‘s move and felt as though they didn’t get their money’s worth for the show.

Following the performance, a spectator took to TikTok to allege that Steve had gotten frustrated with the audience’s lack of familiarity with his music and blamed unruly NOLA fans for allegedly destroying an artist’s experience when they visit the city.

While Steve has plenty of time to put on a lengthy — and hopefully more successful — performance in the remaining 12 cities, his NOLA show has certainly left its mark on the public.

And he isn’t the only one at the center of criticism.

Steve’s friend Kanye West is not having the best week after being dropped from several brand and endorsement deals in light of semantic remarks he made during an appearance on Drink Champs.

The fact that Steve and Kanye West had identical tattoos with musician Lil Uzi Vert (real name Symere Bysil Woods) suggests that they were close friends, despite being “different.”

During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Angela Yee jokingly asked Steve if he thinks the tattoo aged well. He replied,

“I ask myself that question everyday…I don’t know.”

When asked if he’s still friends with the Chicago rapper, Steve was seemingly apprehensive but said,

“Kanye?…Yeah.”

As previously reported, in August, Steve took to Instagram to reveal the matching ink. In the photo, it appears that the three artists placed their tattoos right above their forearms. The tattoo says:

“We here forever technically.”
