Prolific New York Rapper Hurricane G Dies At 52: A Legend In Her Own Right In The Hip-Hop Community
Hurricane G (real name Gloria Rodriguez) has died. She was 52.
The trailblazing New York rapper of Puerto Rican heritage left her mark on Hip-Hop culture in the 1990s, rapping with artists including Redman, Xzibit, and Sean “Diddy” Combs. She was the first female member of the East Coast band Hit Squad.
While her cause of death wasn’t immediately known, her daughter Lexus shared in May that the rapper was battling cancer.
According to Lexus,
“My mom has stage 4 lung cancer. I don’t know how many of you understand what that means but even after 30 years of life I’m still trying to process it myself. I have never cried so much in my life I have never felt so disconnected from reality in my life.”
Erick Sermon of EPMD, who shared a daughter with Hurricane G, shared a touching tribute to the mother of his oldest daughter via Instagram. He said,
“My heart is hardened today. One of my good friends…. my oldest daughter’s mother passed away today #HURRICANEGLORIA was also a legend in her own right in the Hiphop community. One of the first puertorican female rappers She rapped with me. @redmangilla she paved the way.”
Hurricane G’s solo album All Woman (1997) was produced by Domingo Padilla, who also expressed his admiration for the musician. He said,
“R.I.P to my good friend Hurricane G. Really sad news to get. I was blessed to know her and produce her debut album. God bless her family and daughter.”

In a separate post, Domingo Padilla remembered his longtime friend as
“a really kind hearted funny person but when she was mad stay out her way…LOL.”
He continued,
“I saw her make a famous radio personality cry in a studio and when I drove Gloria home we argued about why she did that and she kept it real with me she said ‘Domingo that bi**h don’t fool me she is a 2 face’ Gonna miss speaking to her on the phone and hear her say “Domingo you got that funky ass f*re for me or what motherf*cker.”
