‘SNL’ Staff Writers Boycott Over Dave Chappelle’s Upcoming Hosting Gig
It looks like some of the staff writers at “SNL” are not too pleased that Dave Chappelle will be a host for their upcoming show this weekend.
According to sources, some staff writers are so furious that the comedy superstar — who has made transphobic and homophobic jokes — has been chosen to host the iconic show that they’re boycotting the episode.
An insider told sources,
“They’re not going to do the show. But none of the actors are boycotting.”
However, reps for Dave Chappelle say there was nothing to suggest that there was a boycott when they attended writers’ meetings earlier this week. Chappelle was at 30 Rock on Tuesday (Nov. 8) meeting with writers and producers and his rep said “there was no evidence of a boycott.” They told sources:
“The room was full of writers. They all pitched ideas and they seemed very excited about it…. Dave is looking to have some fun.”
“SNL” revealed last week that the “Chappelle Show” star would host the show with musical guest Black Star on Nov. 12 –marking Chappelle’s third time as a host. While some fans (and critics) are excited about seeing Dave Chappelle on their TV screens, others are expressing their disappointment with “SNL” for having a “transphobic” host.
As previously reported, Dave Chappelle found himself at the center of backlash over comments he made in his Netflix stand-up comedy special The Closer. The popular comic made more than a few controversial jokes throughout his show, describing the #MeToo movement as “annoying as f**k” and recalling an incident in which he beat up a lesbian for punching him.
Later, he declared himself to be a TERF—a trans-exclusionary radical feminist—someone who does not consider trans women to be women. Chappelle said,
“I’m team TERF! Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on Earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on Earth. That is a fact. Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren’t women, I am just saying that those p*ssies that they got… you know what I mean? I’m not saying it’s not p*ssy, but it’s Beyond P*ssy or Impossible P*ssy. It tastes like p*ssy, but that’s not quite what it is, is it? That’s not blood, that’s beet juice.”
Chappelle then said he was done making jokes about the LGBTQ community, before adding,
“I’m done talking about it. All I ask of your community, with all humility: will you please stop punching down on my people.”
After the announcement, “SNL” writer Celeste Yim reportedly wrote on her Instagram Story:
“I’m trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned.”
Former Netflix employee Terra Field–who sued the streaming service claiming they retaliated against them for speaking out against Chappelle– had this to say about the announcement:
“Wait I thought I cancelled him. Is it possible cancel culture isn’t a real thing??”
Neither Dave Chappelle nor “SNL” have responded to the controversy and backlash surrounding the comedian hosting the upcoming episode.
