Tyler Perry Opens Up About Becoming The Godfather Of Prince Harry & Meghan Markle’s Daughter Lilibet: I Had To Take A Minute To Take That In

Tyler Perry is a man of many hats, but the latest one he wears happens to be as the Godfather of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daughter, Lilibet.

During the second volume of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s highly-anticipated Netflix docuseries, which debuted on Thursday (Dec. 15), Tyler Perry revealed the very moment that The Duke and Duchess of Sussex asked him to take on the honorary title.

He detailed, indicating that it actually took place over the phone,

“[Usually] we’ll call, and we’ll chat, and we’ll talk about silly things, but they were pretty serious on the phone, and I go like, ‘Okay, what’s going on?’ They said, ‘Well, we’d like for you to be Lili’s Godfather.’ I go, ‘Whoa…’ I had to take a minute to take that in. And I thought… I’d be honored, I’d absolutely be honored.”

However, not so fast! When it came to the logistics of stepping into such a prominent role, Tyler Perry needed it to be known that he had a few prerequisites of his own.

The award-winning filmmaker seemingly continued by expressing that he preferred to make things official with Baby Lilibet in the states–not overseas, on their old Royal stomping grounds.

“I got off the phone, took it all in, then I called them back. I go, ‘Hold on a second! Does this mean we gotta go over [to the United Kingdom] and do all of that in the church with them and figure all of that out? ‘Cause I don’t want to do that. Maybe we can do a little private ceremony [in the United States] and let that be that. And, if you have to do it there, it’s okay.'”

Clearly, everything worked out just fine, as Perry proudly gloated about the joyous occasion while smiling ear to ear.

Although (for some) Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Perry may be an unlikely friend trio, the 53-year-old’s bond with the couple blossomed after he sent his support to Markle amid the chaos surrounding her estranged relationship with her father, producer Thomas Markle.

The Madea phenomenon said,

“I couldn’t even imagine this woman finding the man that she loved, the man of her dreams, and him being a prince, and then to walk into all of that madness and need the security of family and then have your father do some horrible things.”

Subsequent to Markle contacting Perry to vent about her publicized adversities, Perry’s connection with the husband and wife strengthened after he opened up his California mansion to the pair in 2020. Reportedly, following their exit from The Royal Family, Harry and Markle were stripped of their security and needed a place to stay once they departed the United Kingdom. Perry then reached out and offered to house them upon their arrival to the States.

Prior to his assistance, Perry and the Royal rebels had never even met each other in person before, but his need to lend a helping hand sparked another level of closeness between the three.

Harry recalled,

“[Perry] said, ‘Stay as long as you need to.’ We said, ‘Maybe we just stay forever.'”
