Whoopi Goldberg Apologizes Again For Controversial ‘Holocaust Was Not About Race’ Remarks Following Accusations She Was ‘Doubling Down’ On Them

Whoopi Goldberg is, once again, addressing her holocaust comments — but she is not doubling down on them.

The Sister Act star found herself at the center of controversy and a two-week suspension from The View when she said earlier this year that the holocaust was

“not about race.“

Since then, Whoopi Goldberg took part in an interview with the Sunday Times of London to promote Till, the film in which she plays Alma Carthan, the mother of civil rights pioneer Mamie Till-Mobley, whose 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, was tortured and killed in 1955. While on the topic of race, Whoopi Goldberg seemed to reiterate her past controversial remarks.

She is now apologizing after sparking controversy … again.

In a statement released via her rep, Goldberg said,

“Recently while doing press in London, I was asked about my comments from earlier this year. I tried to convey to the reporter what I had said and why, and attempted to recount that time. It was never my intention to appear as if I was doubling down on hurtful comments, especially after talking with and hearing people like rabbis and old and new friends weighing in.”

She added,

“I’m still learning a lot and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me. I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt and angered people. My sincere apologies again, especially to everyone who thought this was a fresh rehash of the subject. I promise it was not. In this time of rising antisemitism, I want to be very clear when I say that I always stood with the Jewish people and always will. My support for them has not wavered and never will.”

While suspended from The View, Goldberg, who makes $5 million per year from the popular talk show, was without pay — meaning the EGOT entertainer reportedly lost out on a $192,000 paycheck during her hiatus.

During her interview with the Sunday Times, Goldberg indicated there is a debate about whether Jews are a race or a religious community. She said,

“My best friend said, ‘Not for nothing is there no box on the census for the Jewish race. So that leads me to believe that we’re probably not a race.'”

She added,

“The oppressor is telling you what you are. Why are you believing them? They’re Nazis. Why believe what they’re saying?”
