JT Says She’s Thankful For The Tough Love She Has Received From Nicki Minaj + Shares She’s Working On Being ‘Unapologetically’ Herself, Despite Being Labeled As The ‘Angry Black Girl’

Nicki Minaj’s advice helped JT build the tough skin needed to thrive within the entertainment industry.

Recently, one-half of the City Girls sat down with Angie Martinez on her podcast “In Real Life,” where the two women discussed JT’s rough childhood, prison stint, music career, and her relationship with fellow rapper Lil Uzi Vert.

After listing other occupations she’s considered having because opinions on the internet can be overwhelming at times, JT said she constantly has to remind herself of why she started rapping in the first place. The 30-year-old then said:

“I feel like that’s what I was lacking over these years and [it’s] somebody so special to me who told me that.”

 JT, born Jatavia Johnson, continued:

“It was a female [who gave the advice,] and she was a rapper and she just got the most toughest love ever. Like, she would tell you some sh*t and at the moment…”

Media mogul Angie Martinez chimed in:

“This has to be Nicki.”

JT confirmed:

“Yeah.”

She continued:

“You would think about it like ‘she’s so right.’ You got this talent, you got this gift, you can write this down and not many people can do this. So you need to come and you need to do what you came to do and you need to go as hard as you can. You can’t think about outside opinions ‘cause that’s my problem. I let everything just get in my ear ‘cause I think they’re right for whatever reason.”

She added:

“It’s like, if you so right you would be on a different level, you wouldn’t just be talking you’d be getting to it. So, I feel like that’s where I’m at right now. Just getting to it, giving the people what I’m here for, which is music and being unapologetically me. Because I feel like if I shut up nobody would have nothing to say about me and that’s kind of f*ck*d up because why do I have to shut up?”

The Miami native shared:

“I feel like the internet has painted me as like this angry Black girl. Like ‘she always mad. She always got an attitude.’”

She explained:

“That really bothers me because it’s like, y’all don’t even know me. I could be joking, I could just be talking, I could just be having an opinion and defending myself and I’m the mad one, I’m the crazy one, I’m the rude one, I’m the nasty one.”

JT’s relationship with the Queen of Rap has come a long way. Fans previously suggested JT had beef with her now-friend because her diss track seemingly aimed at the “Bang Bang” rapper leaked online.

As previously reported, in 2019, after the track surfaced online, Yung Miami, 28, came to JT’s defense on Instagram Live and said:

“What the f*** JT look like dissing Cardi B? JT ain’t diss no Cardi B. Everybody know we f*** with Cardi B. That’s not no diss track. That was two years ago. We were sitting in the car freestyling. JT ain’t diss Cardi B, she ain’t say s*** about Cardi B. What she said was Cardi had ‘Love & Hip Hop’ to help her. That was her platform. We ain’t got no platform. Where’s the diss?”

The “Caresha Please” host continued:

“Keep JT name out y’all mouth. Stop posting us. We don’t need y’all to post us. Y’all don’t post s*** positive about us. Y’all just make us seem like we got problems with everybody… We were just playing. We never thought that we were gonna be rappers. We were just sitting in the car, playing around, freestyling on the beat. We didn’t think anybody was gonna hear that. We didn’t think were [about to] be signed. We never thought none of that. We were just playing around. We never once said anything bad about Cardi B.”
