Azealia Banks Recalls Sleeping In Storage Space While Being ‘Famous & Broke’: ‘I Had N*gg*s Stealing My Royalties & Sh*t’

Azealia Banks can attest to “everything that glitters ain’t gold.”

Azealia Banks was candid about the downfalls she experienced while being famous in a recent interview.  The rapper shared:

“There was a point in time when people didn’t want to book me.”

Azealia Banks, 31, explained:

“I had n*gg*s stealing my royalties and all type of sh*t. Like, there was a point in time when I was so f*ck*ng broke that I was sleeping in a storage space. You know, famous and broke.”

The 31-year-old shared that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and claimed the music industry didn’t support her throughout her battle. You may be aware that Azealia Banks has been in the hot seat countless times over the years for her questionable actions.

Back in 2015, the artist was under fire after comparing the LGBTQ community to the KKK, claiming she wanted to “spray a gay man in the face with pepper spray,” moments after using a homophobic slur against a flight attendant. A year later, the Harlem native took accountability and said she’d never say “the word f*gg*t ever again.”

However, the controversial artist was suspended from Twitter after a transphobic rant in 2020, before getting her account back in April 2022. Banks said:

“I can be a little messy.”

Banks continued:

“Everybody makes a bad joke sometimes. Like, who cares? Quentin Tarantino gets paid $500m to make really bad jokes all the time, you know? Come on. Let me get my sh*t off.”

During the interview, the Warner records artist also opened up about her father passing away from pancreatic cancer when she was 2-years-old and having to accept her mother’s diagnosis of schizophrenia eight years later. She said:

“I was raised by Dominican caretakers. My mom would throw them a couple thousand dollars and just disappear for five weeks.”

She admitted:

“I would just be in my head, like, ‘Does my mother not want me anymore? Is she coming back? Is she alive?'”

She continued:

“She would brag about how she did witchcraft and killed my father.”

As previously reported, Banks has had public disputes with many celebrities, including;  actress Skai Jackson, and entertainers Lana Del Rey and Cardi B. Last June she abruptly left the stage after tossing her microphone during a performance at Wynwood Pride in Miami, after being fed up with the promoters’ alleged unprofessionalism. She’s previously addressed the incident and said:

“For the last good, like, month and a half, I’ve just been being f*ck*d with. I’ve been being f*ck*d around with, you know? Set time’s been moved and like, ‘Oh, you’re headlining. No, you’re not headlining. Now you’re not this.’ I’m really not happy to be here.”

The songwriter claimed her actions throughout her early career was a result of being constantly told that she was “a bad person” at an early age. She elaborated during her latest interview:

“I think a lot of that early indoctrination, especially during my fundamental years, followed me into the music industry – where you would see me lashing out at people and just, like, being bad.”

The rapper continued:

“Because that’s who I was told I was. When I came into fame and I had all these people showering me with love and admiration, [telling me] I was good and they liked the things I was creating, it was really uncomfortable for me. I didn’t know how to accept any of that. Nobody ever told me that I was pretty when I was little.”

Today, Banks thinks of herself as a good person, despite her many (many) feuds with industry people. She said:

“People are always like, oh, it’s the Azealia Banks redemption arc. But who the f*ck am I redeeming myself for? You should be trying to redeem yourselves for me.”
