Marques Houston might have landed himself in the hot seat as he tried to explain the dynamics of his marriage.

Entertainer Marques Houston, 41, is no stranger to making headlines. He’s been in the spotlight since he was a child and has done it all from being in the R&B group “IMx,” to even starring in the hit Disney series “Sister, Sister.” And he’s become the center of discussion once again, however, this time it isn’t because of his talent.

The “That Girl” singer is currently facing criticism due to a promotional clip for his upcoming episode of TVOne’s Uncensored. During the video, Marques Houston opened up about his marriage to 22-year-old Miya Dickey (now Miya Houston). The couple tied the knot in 2020 when Miya was 19.

While speaking on the backlash he received for marrying Miya while she was still a teenager, Marques Houston said,

“Me and my wife’s situation is a little different. How we met through mutual friends and everything like that. When I met my wife, she was 17. So, no [real] conversation…no [real] connection until, you know, she was of age.”

He continued and explained what initially attracted him to Miya.

“People don’t understand it and I got a lot of backlash for marrying someone that was 19. When we did finally start to talk I was like, ‘This woman is like me’ and when I would talk to her she’d just – for one, we had a spiritual connection and I feel like that’s the most important thing. We both love God. We both love Jehovah and that was key.”

He then expressed that the more he was around his now-wife, the more he felt close to her on “so many different levels.”

“Being able to start being around her and talking to her we connected through music. Her spirit, her kindness, her heart reminds me a lot of my mom. You know, we connected on so many different levels.”

Marques and Miya are seemingly unbothered by what the naysayers have to say about their relationship. They welcomed a daughter in December 2021 and appear to be going strong.

However, their bond hasn’t stopped the public from weighing in on their large age gap. One Twitter user said,

“Miya went missing in 2016 and Chris Stokes starts posting her on his insta as his ‘spiritual daughter’ from like 2017 so that alone is like, where he find this underage girl? and then he posts her and Marques Houston together in 2018 like something very wrong happened there”
