‘Abbott Elementary’ Star Tyler James Williams Shuts Down Gay Rumors, Warns That Trying To “Guess” People’s Sexuality Is Dangerous To LGBT Community: They Fear Living In Their Truth

Actor Tyler James Williams set the record straight for those questioning his sexual preference.

In a lengthy instagram post, the “Abbott Elementary” star dispelled ongoing internet speculations that he might be gay, and gave a thoughtful perspective on why trying to guess people’s sexuality is a slippery slope.

Tyler James Williams, 30, wrote on his social platform:

“Usually I wouldn’t address stuff like this but I feel like it as a conversation is bigger than me. I’m not gay; but I think the culture of trying to “find” some kind of hidden trait or behavior that a closeted person “let slip” is very dangerous.”

Adding:

“Overanalyzing someone’s behavior in an attempt to ‘catch’ them directly contributes to the anxiety a lot of queer and queer questioning people feel when they fear living in their truth.”

The TV star went on to further elaborating the point, and wished everyone a Happy pride with hopeful thoughts of a more accepting future. Tyler James Williams currently stars on the hit ABC sitcom alongside fellow star and creator Quinta Brunson. The show had a phenomenal debut, receiving glowing audience reviews and racking up many accolades during this years award season. Williams plays the newcomer teacher with a massive crush on Brunson’s character. His performance earned him his first Golden Globe for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical–Comedy or Drama Television Series”. Additionally, Williams took home the NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series”.

Despite the praise the show has received since its 2021 premiere, some have chosen to focus the conversation around Williams’ sexuality. Many online users critiqued the on-screen chemistry between he and Brunson, questioning if the actor is actually gay. Now, viewers can tune into the program without the pondering thought lingering, and also have something to think about should they find themselves once again speculating on anyone else’s sexual preference.
