Notorious B.I.G. — Rapper’s Son To Give ‘Intimate Look At The Untold Life Story’ Of His Father In New Doc
A new documentary about the Notorious B.I.G. is in the works, and this time his son is the one telling the story.
Understanding Christopher Wallace, produced by Time Studios, is described as “an intimate look at the untold life story of one of the greatest rappers to ever live… from the perspective of the son who never knew him.”
C.J. Wallace, the rapper’s only child with R&B singer Faith Evans, was born in October 1996. He was just five months old when his father was shot to death in Los Angeles, California, in March 1997.
According to Time Studios, the forthcoming documentary explores ideas of identity, legacy, and parenthood as it switches back and forth between the lives of Christopher Jr. and Sr., starting in the 2020s and ending in the 1980s. In his attempt to understand his own destiny better, C.J. Wallace discovers a more complete picture of his father than anyone has ever seen.
While speaking on the project, C.J. Wallace said,
“Over the past few years, I realized my personal journey is connected to understanding who Christopher George Latore Wallace was outside of his big rap persona. I am on a journey to fully understand the world he lived in and the massive impact he had on American and Black history and by doing so, I can ensure that I honor his hopes and dreams while I build and create my own legacy for future generations of Wallaces.”
Faith Evans, Lil Kim, Jadakiss, and Lil Cease are among those who take part and speak with C.J. in the documentary.
With the release of the multi-platinum albums Ready to Die and Life After Death, which came out 16 days after his assassination, Notorious B.I.G. achieved massive success in the 1990s. He was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 and is known for many hit songs, including “Juicy,” “Big Poppa,” “Hypnotize,” and “Mo Money, Mo Problems.”
Loren Hammonds, head of documentary at Time Studios, said,
“The Notorious B.I.G. had such an immense impact on not only music, but also on popular culture as a whole. But this film is about so much more than that. It’s about fatherhood, loss, and love. It’s incredibly special to be able to let audiences learn about the man behind the myth through C.J.’s eyes, and we’re very proud to play a part in carrying on Christopher Wallace’s inimitable legacy.”
The film’s director, Vikram Gandhi, who is well recognized for his work on Trigger Warning with Killer Mike, added,
“It’s an honor to document C.J.’s personal odyssey to understand his father and to create a deeper and more definitive film about the man behind the persona Notorious B.I.G., Christopher Wallace.”
