Lil Wayne Believes He’s Too Awesome To Have His Voice Affected By A.I.: ‘I Would Love To See That Thing Try To Duplicate This Motherf*cker’

Lil Wayne — real name Dwayne Michael Carter — isn’t really worried about artificial intelligence stealing his voice.

During an interview with Billboard for the 50th anniversary of hip hop, the rap legend said it’s impossible for AI to mimic his voice because he’s just too awesome. The remarks were made in response to his perspective regarding the impact of technology on creativity.

Lil Wayne said,

“They were trying to tell me that A.I. could make a voice that sounds just like me. But it’s not me because I’m amazing. I’m like, is this A.I. thing going to be amazing too?… I would love to see that thing try to duplicate this motherf**ka.”

The 40-year-old rapper said mixtapes are comparable to other types of recordings when asked about their relevance in light of A.I. and other cutting-edge technology. Lil Wayne has also stated that his mixtapes would continue to be coveted and remain faithful to their original format.

He added,

“The terminology or definition has changed, that’s all. Mixtapes can mean an album mix or anything now. But when it comes to Lil Wayne, everybody knows how I approach mixtapes. So my mixtapes won’t ever change.”

Lil Wayne‘s remarks follow the removal of a song from an album by Haitian artist MechansT after he discovered AI was used to produce a feature from Kendrick Lamar.

MechansT released his song “Goat” as part of his album, “À Table !” However, it didn’t take long for some people to recognize that the vocals weren’t actually Kendrick Lamar’s. Instead, they allegedly used AI technology to replicate the hip-hop artist’s award-winning voice.

MechansT, Kendrick Lamar

Not only was Kendrick Lamar’s guest verse fake, but the feature was unauthorized for utilization.

MechansT reportedly took down the fake Kendrick Lamar track from all streaming services on July 13. The Haitian musician then used Instagram to apologize to his followers and issue a formal press release, noting that he and his team are investigating.

The statement read, in part,

“With the evolution of the current events, a decision was made to recall ‘Goat’ and ‘Amanda’ titles from the album with respect to an investigation in regards to allegations against the authenticity of the features. My team and I are working tirelessly to get to the bottom of it and we will share our findings as soon as we come to a concrete explanation of the situation.”
