Update: Iggy Azalea Says She ‘Never Intended To Publicly Comment’ As She Addresses Backlash For Writing Judge A Letter Of Support For Tory Lanez

Update: (Aug. 8, 2023): Iggy Azalea wasn’t aware that her letter of support for Tory Lanez would become public information.

As previously reported, yesterday (Aug. 7) Iggy faced backlash for being among the 70+ people who wrote a letter to the sentencing judge in the Tory Lanez shooting case. You may recall that the entertainer was convicted on three felony charges for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. According to legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff, Iggy wrote a letter asking the judge to give a sentence “that is transformational, not life destroying.”

After being slammed for her letter, Iggy took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to defend herself. In a lengthy statement, she wrote,

“For the record:

1. I have not been in touch with tory for months, I have no reason to be, but I do wish him well.

2. I don’t “support” anyone. the whole thing is full of oddities. My letter never mentioned anything in regard to what happened that night.

3. I was told this was for a judge only, yet it’s being discussed in public? I never intended to publicly comment.”

She continued,

4. Iam not in support of throwing away ANY ones life if we can give reasonable punishments that are rehabilitative instead. I support prison reform. Period.

5. I was asked to write about my genuine experience and the type of punishment I think he deserves: I did.

It’s not really that interesting but I understand why it’s being sensationalized. . . See ya next week to discuss pizza toppings I suppose. Lol”

Original story: (Aug. 7, 2023): Iggy Azalea is unapologetically standing in support of Tory Lanez.

As previously reported, Tory Lanez, 31, is set to be sentenced today (Aug. 7) for shooting Megan Thee Stallion. In December he was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic handgun, having a loaded, unregistered firearm, and gross negligence in discharging his firearm. Tory Lanez is facing over 20 years, however, in his recently submitted sentencing memorandum, the “Say It” singer requested that he be released on probation and enrolled in a substance abuse program. Prosecutors have asked the judge to give him 13 years in prison.

According to legal affairs journalist Meghann Cuniff, for the sentencing hearing, Judge Herriford received over 70 letters from people showing support for Tory Lanez or advocating for his release. One of the letters of support was written by fellow music artist Iggy Azalea, 33. You may recall that before Tory Lanez was convicted on three felony charges, it was highly speculated that he was dating the Australian native. In her letter, Iggy Azalea reportedly asked the judge to give a sentence “that is transformational, not life destroying.”

Two incarcerated men were also among those who wrote letters to the judge. According to one inmate, Tory — who has been behind bars since December — started a daily prayer meeting which has “lessened the tensions between inmates.” The judge also said a jailer claimed that Tory “is remorseful” and has talked about “the [shooting] event and what he could have done to prevent it.” This is a different tune from the innocent narrative the entertainer has been pushing.

Iggy Azalea showing support for Tory — who was found guilty of shooting a woman — may come as a shock to some as she’s previously spoken out against abusive men. In February Iggy Azalea blasted her baby’s father/ex, 26-year-old Playboi Carti, over their “volatile relationship.” She said,

“I was like, I will never let my son see this because I don’t want him to see someone talk to me this way too but because I don’t want him to ever learn this, I don’t want him to be exposed to this.”

After news broke that Playboi Carti was arrested in Georgia for allegedly choking his pregnant girlfriend, Iggy took to Twitter and hinted that he physically abused her too. She said,

“Been there. Done that. Warned you.”

She continued,

“Imagine having a pregnant girlfriend and pretending they don’t exist until it comes out you like to abuse them too – & rarely visiting your actual son unless is because you’re running from whatever problems ya got going on in Atlanta & the press with your serial abuse of woman”
