Update: NeNe Leakes Speaks Out After Being Sued For Over $22k In Unpaid Rent: ‘Gregg Signed The Lease!’
Update: (Aug. 17, 2023): Should NeNe Leakes have to foot the bill for a lease her late husband signed?
As previously reported, NeNe was recently hit with a lawsuit for allegedly failing to pay the rent for her former Sugarloaf Mills clothing store, Swagg Boutique. According to the landlord, the reality TV star owes $22,900 in back rent payments. The store opened in 2017 at the mall, however, in the summer of 2020 — after briefly shutting down due to the pandemic — Swagg Boutique held “going out of business” sales at its multiple locations. NeNe’s lease at her Sugarloaf Mills store officially ended in early 2022, according to reports.
The landlord reportedly sent NeNe a letter last month, informing her that she would need to settle the debt if she wants to avoid legal troubles. However, the 5-figure bill still hasn’t been paid and it looks like we now know why.
NeNe recently slid into our comment section on Instagram and shared,
“Gregg signed the lease! He ain’t here”
As you may recall, the entertainer’s husband, Gregg Leakes, unfortunately, passed away in 2021 from colon cancer. It’s unclear how this entire situation will play out in court, but, the landlord is seeking damages to cover the back rent plus their attorney’s fees.
Original story: (Aug. 16, 2023):
NeNe Leakes is the latest “RHOA” alum to be at the center of a failure-to-pay-rent lawsuit.
According to reports, the reality TV star is accused of skipping out on a $22,900 rent tab that she owes the landlord of her former clothing store, Swagg Boutique. You may recall that NeNe Leakes first opened the Georgia — Sugarloaf Mills — location of her apparel shop in 2017. She also had store locations in Maryland and Florida. However, she temporarily had to shut down in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. NeNe Leakes did eventually reopen, but, soon held “going out of business” sales at her multiple stores.
The landlord of the former Sugarloaf Mills location claims that after NeNe initially signed her first lease agreement in 2017 she extended the contract for another year in 2021. However, when the term ended in 2022, NeNe allegedly never paid off the 5-figure remaining balance that was owed. According to the landlord, NeNe was sent a letter last month, telling her that in order to avoid any legal trouble she would need to settle her debt. However, it appears that she has yet to do so. Now, the landlord is seeking damages to cover the back rent and their attorney’s fees.
NeNe Leakes isn’t the only person from the “RHOA” franchise who has been accused of owing back rent. As previously reported, Peter Thomas – the ex-husband of “RHOA” alum Cynthia Bailey – made headlines in July after being sued over allegations that he was extremely behind on rent for his Miami-based establishment, Bar One. He allegedly owes $422k in rent, outstanding costs, utility charges, and sales taxes. However, a few weeks after the reports surfaced, Peter’s restaurant filed documents asking a judge to dismiss the eviction notice because,
“any disputes as to rents owed have been paid and an accord has been reached to resolve the issue, default, or dispute.”
