SZA Says Her Brief Romance w/ Drake ‘Was So Childish’

SZA has shared details surrounding her brief fling with Drake that took place over a decade ago.

During a recent interview, the R&B singer/songwriter opened up about her past relationship with Canadian rapper/singer Drake. You may recall, the pair reportedly dated in 2009 when they were in the early stages of their careers.

SZA, 33, spoke about her romantic time with Drake, 36, and said,

“We were really young. It wasn’t hot and heavy or anything. It was like youth vibes. It was so childish.”

As previously reported, Drake, real name Aubrey Graham, revealed his former relationship with the “Snooze” singer in the lyrics of the 2020 song “Mr. Right Now” with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin. On the track, Drake raps,

“Yeah, said she wanna f*** to some SZA, wait/’Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08.”

Shortly after the song’s release, SZA, born Solána Rowe, took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm that the two did in fact date. However, the songstress clarified that the relationship didn’t occur in 2008, but a year later in 2009. She wrote,

“So It was actually 2009 lol .. in this case a year of poetic rap license mattered lol I think he jus innocently rhymed 08 w wait . Anybody who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm.. it’s all love all peace”

In addition, SZA took the time to clear up any speculations that their love affair was inappropriate, seemingly due to her young age at the time. In a separate post, she added,

“I just didn’t want anybody thinking anything underage or creepy was happening . Completely innocent . Lifetimes ago .”

Despite Drake outing their past romance, it appears the musicians are on good terms and it’s all love between them. Regarding their current friendship, SZA previously stated,

“We’re cool. And we’ve always been cool…It’s never been weird…Anytime he’s ever mentioned me, it’s always been positive. He’s never said anything negative about me. I’m grateful for that. I think highly of him…He’s King Drake.”

Last month, SZA and Drake released their first-ever collaboration “Slime You Out” from the rapper’s upcoming album “For All the Dogs.” The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming SZA’s second track to top the chart and Drake’s 12th US number one.
