Jada Pinkett Smith Understood Being Blamed For Husband’s Decision To Slap Chris Rock At Oscars: ‘Considering The False Narrative That I Had Cheated On Will’
Jada Pinkett Smith understands the backlash she received after Will Smith‘s Oscars incident — even if she wasn’t to blame.
The mother of two recently reflected on the allegations that she had anything to do with her husband’s decision to slap Chris Rock, pointing out how the situation spiraled completely out of control.
Jada Pinkett Smith said,
“But I also understood at the same time. Considering the false narrative that I had cheated on Will or I was like some adulteress, Will had never done that before. And I think that when we just look at human nature… when you look at the breadcrumbs, people need something to blame.”
She added,
“And so people not knowing what was happening behind the scenes, I surely wasn’t surprised that I got blamed. But I understood that that’s just the human nature of it all.”

Will Smith won his first Oscar for Best Actor during the ceremony on March 27, 2022. However, the night took a sharp turn when Chris Rock made a joke comparing Jada Pinkett Smith to G.I. Jane because of her shaved head — which she wears as a result of hair loss from alopecia.
As previously reported, Pinkett Smith — who has apparently been separated from Will Smith since 2016 — claims she initially didn’t realize the severity of the situation. She said,
“I thought, ‘This is a skit.’ I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”
Following the incident, he was banned from attending Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events — including the Oscars — for 10 years.
Despite the public’s speculation, Will previously shared that his wife “had nothing to do” with how he reacted to Chris Rock‘s joke about her alopecia. In a video on his Facebook page and YouTube channel in July 2022, Will said, in part,
“It’s like… I made a choice on my own from my own experiences, from my history with Chris. Jada had nothing to do with it. I’m sorry, babe. I want to say sorry to my kids and my family for the heat that I’ve brought on all of us.”
