Taye Diggs’ Ex-Wife Idina Menzel Says ‘Disappointment’ In The Actor’s Interracial Marriage From The Black Community Played A Big Role In Their Divorce

Broadway star Idina Menzel is opening up about her previous marriage to fellow actor Taye Diggs.

During a recent interview, the actress explained how tensions from “the community” surrounding their interracial relationship affected her then-husband, and ultimately their marriage.

When asked if her surging fame following her breakout role in the 1996 musical “Rent” – where she met Taye Diggs, 52, – impacted their 2003 marriage, Idina Menzel, 52, stated:

“It’s very complicated…very supportive of each other always, so excited for him. The thing that came into play more I would say, and he’s talked about it too, is the interracial aspect of it.”

She continued:

“When you’re in the theater it’s not a thing. We all love each other, and sleep with each other…but when you leave that cocoon, that bubble…now…he’s on the cover of Essence and Ebony and being interviewed by all these Black journalists and I think he had his own stuff to deal with with that.”

And added:

“It seemed like there was disappointment in the community with him because he was married to [a] white, Jewish girl from some show we don’t even remember, and so, I took that on too. That’s stuff that we had to deal with. It was less about being successful and more about that kind of stuff.”

As Menzel stated, Diggs reportedly spoke about the nature of their divorce during a 2014 interview shortly after the musical pair called it quits. The entertainers were married nearly 11 years before they split and welcomed son Walker Nathaniel Diggs in the process. Revealing how he thought their divorce would be perceived by the public, “The Best Man” star reportedly stated at the time:

“I’d be lying if I said there weren’t times when I thought, ‘Oh, man, people are going to trip out [if we split].’ Maybe they thought it was cute that we met in ‘Rent…There weren’t a lot of couples like us in the theater community — and I know there aren’t a lot of performers as talented as she is … and then you have the whole mixed [race] thing. It was easy for people to root for us.”

Despite things not working out romantically, it seems Menzel and Diggs have managed to maintain a healthy co-parenting relationship and friendship. In 2017, the “Frozen” actress married fellow entertainer Aaron Lohr who she remains with to date. Diggs on the other hand has yet to remarry. Last year, however, the actor sparked dating rumors with Omarion’s ex and children’s mother Apryl Jones.

Though neither Diggs nor Jones ever confirmed the relationship, the pair were often seen on social media in cozy settings, sharing PDA moments, on red carpets, and vacationing together. Diggs spoke about their apparent romance, stating the two were “cool” and “enjoying” one another’s company.

In recent weeks, however, it’s been speculated that their budding relationship may have come to an end as it’s been a few months since either has been featured on the other’s social media pages. Neither have spoken recently about their status at this time.
