The Black Panther star began to praise Bailey and her performance in the Disney live-action remake.
“She’s lovely. She represented so well for us. I mean, we were streaming tears at the end of it because you were beautiful. Your soul is beautiful, your talent was radiant.”
Sterling K. Brown continued to commend Bailey, stating,
“If you had done it and you were bad, nobody would be messing … But you killed it!”
Brown’s wife, actress Ryan Michelle Bathe, also hailed Bailey with compliments, noting of the 1989 original,
“You don’t understand, I watched that movie every single day from the age of like 12 to 16.”
She took a brief pause as she held back tears, then continued,
“I didn’t think I’d see us. And not only was it us, it was so you. You brought you and then you brought us in bringing you.”
Bathe added,
“It was unspeakable joy for me.”
Throughout the interaction, Bailey expressed her gratitude as she shed tears at the thoughtful compliments from the couple.
Bailey attended the SAG awards alongside her castmates from the musical film version of The Color Purple. Bailey appeared as the younger version of Nettie Harris in the musical film adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel. The film was up for two awards, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
