Oprah Recalls How She ‘Starved’ Herself On Liquid Diet To Lose 67 Pounds: ‘The Very Next Day, I Started To Gain It Back’

Update (March 19): Oprah Winfrey didn’t hold back when opening up about her weight loss journey on a prime-time television special that aired Monday night (March 19).

The media mogul hosted An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution to raise awareness and education on weight loss drugs, after recently revealing that she used them to lose weight (she also stepped down from the WeightWatchers board).

She said of taking the medication,

“There is now a sense of hope, No. 1, and No. 2, you no longer blame yourself. When I tell you how many times I have blamed myself because you think, ‘I’m smart enough to figure this out,’ and then to hear all along, it’s you fighting your brain.”

Oprah Winfrey revealed that she “starved” herself for five months to lose nearly 70 pounds. She famously showed off the weight loss by bringing a “wagon of fat” on her former daytime talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show.

“After losing 67 pounds on liquid diet, the next day, the very next day, I started to gain it back.”

Decades later, she’s sharing a lesson she learned and how her perspective about health has changed.

“All these years, I thought all of the people who never had to diet were just using their willpower and they were for some reason stronger than me. But now I realize y’all weren’t even thinking about the food. It’s not that you had the willpower. You weren’t even thinking about it. You weren’t obsessing about it.”

Original Story (March 7): We’re about to hear Oprah Winfrey’s truth regarding her use of weight-loss medication.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you may be aware that Oprah Winfrey shockingly revealed late last year that she decided to implement a weight-loss drug into her fitness regimen. While she has yet to directly name her diet supplement of choice, it’s highly speculated that she’s taking Ozempic, which has been reportedly growing in popularity for people looking to cut some pounds.

Following her announcement, the media mogul faced scrutiny from some, as she’s been upfront over the years about her battle with obesity and doing what’s needed to maintain her figure in a way that wouldn’t be seen as cheating. The whispers from naysayers only got louder once it was revealed last month that Oprah Winfrey was stepping down from the board of WeightWatchers. She’s been associated with the company since 2015.

Oprah hasn’t said too much on the matter, but it looks like she’s finally ready to face everything head-on. News broke today (Mar. 7) That the Golden Globe Award-winner is set to host a special for ABC titled “An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution,” which will air March 18. According to a synopsis of the special, it will “delve into the prevailing questions and concerns surrounding the impact [of weight-loss medications] on our health care, economy, lifestyle and culture.”

In a released statement, Oprah expressed,

“It is a very personal topic for me and for the hundreds of millions of people impacted around the globe who have for years struggled with weight and obesity.”

She added,

“This special will bring together medical experts, leaders in the space and people in the day-to-day struggle to talk about health equity and obesity with the intention to ultimately release the shame, judgment and stigma surrounding weight.”

In addition to interviews from others around the nation who use weight-loss medication, viewers can expect to hear from medical professionals as they weigh in on the controversial topic as well.
