Alicia Keys Reacts to ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ Earning 13 Tony Nominations: ‘We Gotta Pop a Bottle!’
Alicia Keys has something major to celebrate!
The acclaimed singer and songwriter was elated to learn that her semi-autobiographical musical, “Hell’s Kitchen,” received an impressive 13 Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Musical. Alicia Keys, who crafted the score and music arrangements for the production, marked the occasion with a simple yet heartfelt celebration, popping open a bottle of champagne at 7 a.m.

Sharing her excitement on social media, Alicia Keys, 43, posted a snapshot of herself enjoying the celebratory drink. Her husband, Swizz Beatz, also captured the touching moment on video as Keys received the news, capturing her disbelief:
“We got to pop a bottle — right now! — 7am!”

Kandi Burruss, Busta Rhymes, Lena Waithe, and a host of other celebrities also gave the singer congratulatory comments in response to the joyous post.

After the announcement of “Hell’s Kitchen” receiving the most Tony nominations this year, Keys shared her overwhelming emotions with the New York Times:
“Whoa! I’m definitely in a deep state of freaking out in a really great, awesome, grateful way. I don’t know what’s happening to me — I’m a songwriter and I can’t put my words together, but I feel unbelievable. I’m so excited for everybody to be recognized.”
When asked if she was always confident about the project, Keys replied:
“I’ve always felt really good about it, and I know that we’ve put the work and the time into it, and so I do feel a sense of strength and joy around it, but you just never know how people receive things. You never know how it all goes. And ultimately you can’t create with that in mind — you have to create with your mission in mind.”
“Hell’s Kitchen,” a project Alicia Keys has nurtured for 13 years alongside writer Kristoffer Diaz, director Michael Greif, and choreographer Camille A. Brown, draws inspiration from her own experiences as a young singer in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. The musical follows the journey of a 17-year-old navigating her passion for music amidst a complex relationship with her single mother, portrayed by Shoshana Bean. The show also features some of Keys’ most iconic hits, including “Girl on Fire”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Fallin’”.
CBS will air the 77th Tony Awards on June 16, 2024.
Congratulations to Alicia Keys and the team behind “Hell’s Kitchen”!
