Prince’s Famous Purple Rain Tour Guitar ‘Cloud 3’ Expected To Auction Off For Up To $600k
Wealthy fans of late superstar Prince may have a chance to claim one of his most prized possessions soon.
Reports state that the singer’s iconic yellow ‘Cloud 3’ guitar is set to be auctioned off and is expected to bring some hefty bids.

Prince’s instrument is said to be one of several items that will be auctioned at the end of this month as part of Julien’s Auctions MUSIC ICONS bidding event. Items from other iconic celebrities such as Michael Jackson and John Lennon will be auctioned as well. The bright yellow guitar, formally named by Prince ‘Cloud 3’, is expected to sell for somewhere between $400,000 – $600,000, according to the auction house’s officials.
In the bio of the sale item, the auction house noted that the memorabilia was “one of Prince’s centerpiece instruments,” adding that it is:
“an iconic symbol [of Prince’s] titanic career and rock ‘n’ roll heritage itself.”
The “Kiss” singer famously used the instrument during the height of his stardom and played with it on several of his tours, including his Purple Rain tour in 1984 and 1985, his Parade tour in 1986, his Sign of the Times tour in 1987, as well as his Lovesexy tour in 1988 and 1989 and his Diamonds & Pearls tour in 1992.

Reportedly, the auction house confirmed that the instrument is the real thing by speaking with Dave Rusan, who helped craft the music device, and by conducting a CT scan on it. ‘Cloud 3’ was previously sold twice, first in 2005 via Christie’s auction for $5,247.31 and again on eBay for more than $73,000. Julien’s Auctions officials maintain that they expect to see a significant increase in what the instrument will be sold for this time around, noting their history of selling other Prince items, including a blue teal Cloud which sold for a record-setting $700,000.

The auction house’s CEO David Goodman reportedly spoke about the ‘Cloud 3’ sale in a recent statement, writing:
“Our company proudly stands by our proven track record in sourcing and presenting instruments of unparalleled historical significance…and Prince’s Cloud 3 now joins this esteemed category,”

He added:
“With this guitar and our other exceptional offerings, Julien’s has curated a spectacular collection of the greatest stage-played guitars and historical music artifacts that truly represent a pantheon of music royalty.”
The auction is set to take place on May 29th – 30th.
