Actress Rebel Wilson Says It’s ‘Total Nonsense’ To Claim Only Gay Actors Can Play Gay Roles
Do you think gay roles should be saved for gay actors?
During a recent interview, Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson weighed in on the ongoing debate of who should be allowed to portray LGBTQ+ characters and revealed why she thinks the roles should be open to all. The conversation started after Rebel Wilson was asked if women can “get away with different things to men” when it comes to “edgy” jokes. The Australian native candidly replied,
“I’ve definitely said a lot of edgy jokes, and said them sometimes in very public places like the BAFTAs.”
She continued,
“I don’t think there’s a different standard, it’s more this thing about – if you are something then now you’re allowed to joke about it. So say, if you are overweight, you can say jokes. But if you’re not… that’s kind of what’s currently happening. So it’s not really gendered.”
Diving into whether she sees that as a positive thing or limiting, Rebel Wilson, elaborated,
“I think that’s hard. It’s going into this territory of like saying, ‘Well, only straight actors can play straight roles, and gay actors can play gay roles,’ which I think is total nonsense.”
As previously reported, in June 2022 Wilson revealed her relationship with her then-girlfriend (now-fiancée) Ramona Agruma. Coming out to the world, she wrote on Instagram,
“I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince… but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess #loveislove.”
In February 2023, the love birds got engaged.
Continuing in her latest interview, Wilson said,
“I think you should be able to play any role that you want. But I always think, in comedy, your job is to always flirt with that line of what’s acceptable. Sometimes you do step over it but, at the end of the day, you are trying to entertain people.”
